Analytics

If you accept analytics, we use PostHog to record which pages are viewed and which features are used. This sets a first-party cookie so repeat visits from the same browser are counted once rather than many times. Nothing is recorded before you accept, and nothing is shared with advertisers or sold.

Decline and no analytics cookie is set and no events are sent. You can change your mind at any time by clearing this site’s data in your browser, which brings the banner back.

Accounts

WhereWild has no account system of its own. If you connect an iNaturalist username to see your own observations, that username is stored in your browser and sent to our API only to fetch your public iNaturalist records.

Wildlife data

Species occurrence data comes from GBIF and iNaturalist, and is already public. Sensitive species locations are obscured by those sources before we ever see them.

Server logs

Our API and hosting providers keep standard request logs (IP address, user agent, requested URL) for operational and security purposes. These are not used to build profiles.
