Orange Roughy

This is a deep, cold-water fish of continental slopes and seamounts, typically found hundreds to well over a thousand metres down, so it is not a species anyone encounters by snorkelling or diving; what is known of its behaviour comes mainly from fisheries surveys and deep-water camera footage. It is exceptionally long-lived and slow to mature, forming dense aggregations over seamounts to spawn, which is also what has historically made it vulnerable to intensive trawling. There is no realistic wild-viewing opportunity for the public beyond images and footage from research or fishing vessels.
