About This Species

This schooling freshwater fish is found in slow-moving rivers, canals, and still lakes across Europe, often near reed beds and submerged vegetation where it feeds on invertebrates and plant matter close to the bottom. Visibility is best in clear water during warmer months, when shoals move into shallower margins to feed.

Ethical Viewing Guidelines

  • Observe from the bank or a boat without disturbing bottom sediment or vegetation, since stirred-up silt affects water clarity and the invertebrate prey the fish relies on.
  • Anglers should follow local catch-and-release guidance, as many fisheries set seasons and size limits.
