This schooling freshwater fish is common in slow rivers, canals, and lakes across Europe, often visible from a bank or bridge in clear water as bronze-flanked shoals hold near cover or drift in open water. Look for it around weed beds, bridge pilings, and slack water, particularly in warmer months when shoals move into shallower margins to feed and, in spring, to spawn over vegetation. Early morning or evening light on calm water usually gives the best visibility into the water column.
