Pikeperch

A predatory member of the perch family, this fish favors large, slow-moving rivers, lakes, and reservoirs with turbid water and sandy or gravelly substrates, often holding near submerged structures, drop-offs, and channel edges where it ambushes prey. Watch for swirling surface disturbances at dusk or dawn as it pushes baitfish toward shallows, and in clear water look for its distinctive elongated, greenish-grey flanks with faint dark banding and the telltale tapetum lucidum glow of its eyes when light catches them at an angle. Late spring through early summer around spawning time — when adults move into shallower, structured areas — offers the best observation opportunities, particularly in the low-light hours of early morning on calm days when surface activity is most pronounced.
