Pignose Grunter

Found along sandy beaches, estuaries, and surf zones of southern African coastlines, this perciform fish roots through soft sediments with its distinctive fleshy, downturned snout in search of invertebrates, often working the turbulent shorebreak where wave action exposes prey. Watch for subtle disturbances in the sand in shallow water — a puff of disturbed substrate or a fleeting dark shape moving just ahead of an incoming wave can betray its presence. Low-light periods around dawn and dusk during the warmer summer months tend to concentrate feeding activity in the shallows, making these the most productive times to observe individuals working the intertidal zone close to shore.
