Yellow-Spotted Triggerfish

Found across Indo-Pacific coral reefs and rocky substrates, this robust triggerfish is typically encountered patrolling reef edges and sandy rubble zones in relatively shallow coastal waters, where it uses its strong teeth to overturn rocks and debris in search of invertebrates. Look for a large, diamond-shaped fish with a striking blue-green reticulated pattern on its body and the characteristic erectable dorsal spine that locks upright when the fish is alarmed or sheltering in a crevice. Visibility is best during calm conditions with good water clarity, and individuals tend to be most active and approachable during daylight hours when they are actively foraging; listen for an audible grunting sound, produced by grinding teeth, which can signal a nearby fish before it comes into view.
