Fox Shark

This pelagic species favors temperate to tropical coastal and oceanic waters, frequently occurring near continental shelves and offshore seamounts, where it hunts schooling fish and squid using its extraordinarily elongated upper tail lobe to stun prey. Watch for that distinctive scythe-like caudal fin breaking the surface, often accompanied by sudden, thrashing strikes amid baitfish schools, and keep an eye out for cooperative feeding behavior near the surface during active hunts. Prime viewing opportunities come aboard pelagic fishing or dive charters in late summer and autumn when warm-water prey aggregations peak, with early morning and overcast days tending to bring feeding activity closer to the surface.
