Brown Fur Seal

Rocky coastal outcrops, offshore islands, and sheltered bays along southern African and Australian coastlines serve as prime haul-out sites, where large, boisterous colonies gather to rest, thermoregulate, and nurse pups. Listen for the loud, repetitive barking and growling of territorial bulls, and watch for the characteristic forward-flipper prop posture used when hauled out on rocks. Visit breeding colonies between November and January for peak activity, arriving at dusk when adults returning from nocturnal foraging runs create the greatest surface movement and vocal commotion near the waterline.
