Honey Badger

Found across a remarkable range of habitats from arid savannas and scrublands to forest edges and rocky hillsides, this tenacious carnivore is most active during cooler daylight hours, spending much of its time low-slung and purposeful as it excavates termite mounds, investigates burrows, and raids bee nests with apparent indifference to stings or bites. Watch for a stocky, short-legged silhouette with a distinctive two-tone coat — silver-grey above and black below — moving with a rolling, shuffling gait across open ground, and listen for a persistent, hoarse churring or rattling vocalization when the animal is agitated or actively foraging. Dry season mornings offer the best conditions, when reduced vegetation improves sightlines, prey is concentrated around remaining water sources and exposed insect colonies, and the animal is driven to forage more extensively before midday heat sets in.
