About This Species
Found along clean, fish-rich rivers, lakes, and coastal margins, this semi-aquatic carnivore spends most of its active hours hunting underwater, surfacing frequently to breathe and consume prey on bankside rocks or fallen logs. Dawn and dusk offer the best windows for observation, particularly in quieter stretches where overhanging tree roots and dense riparian vegetation provide secure holts; scan the water surface for the characteristic low, sinuous swimming profile and listen for high-pitched whistling contact calls between individuals. Late winter and early spring are especially productive, when reduced bankside vegetation opens sightlines and increased social activity around breeding brings animals out in daylight more readily than usual.
Ethical Viewing Guidelines
- Maintain a minimum distance of 30 metres, using natural cover or a hide to observe without direct line-of-sight exposure, and always avoid approaching dens, holts, or natal sites, particularly during the breeding season.
- Across its range it receives strong legal protection, including under the EU Habitats Directive (Annex II and IV), the UK Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, and equivalent national legislation in most range states, meaning deliberate disturbance, pursuit, or damage to resting places can constitute a criminal offence.
- Use binoculars or a telephoto lens rather than moving closer, keep noise and movement to a minimum, never use bait or artificial calls to attract individuals, and depart quietly if an animal shows signs of alertness or changes its behaviour in response to your presence.
