• Maintain a minimum distance of 200 metres and use optical aids such as binoculars or a spotting scope rather than approaching closer, as this highly secretive nocturnal species is acutely sensitive to disturbance and will abandon foraging or denning activity if pressured.
• Across its range in South Africa, Botswana, and Namibia, it receives protection under national wildlife legislation including South Africa's Nature Conservation Ordinances and TOPS regulations, Botswana's Wildlife Conservation and National Parks Act, and Namibia's Nature Conservation Ordinance, all of which prohibit harassment, capture, or interference without permits.
• Avoid spotlight use during nocturnal surveys unless conducted under professional research protocols, keep noise and vehicle movement to an absolute minimum, and never share precise location data publicly, as this species' rarity and restricted range make it particularly vulnerable to targeted disturbance.
