About This Species
A crepuscular and nocturnal browser of forest edges, hedgerows and farmland, feeding on leaves, twigs, acorns and crops. Look for well-worn trails, browse lines on shrubs, and animals moving at dawn or dusk into open meadows. The autumn rut brings bucks out into the open chasing does, making October and November the most active viewing window.
Ethical Viewing Guidelines
- Keep at least 30 to 50 metres away, and give extra room during the autumn rut when bucks can be unpredictable and in late spring when does are defending newborn fawns hidden in cover.
- Never approach a fawn that appears alone; its mother is usually nearby and will return once you leave.
- Rules on feeding, harassment and hunting seasons vary by state and province, so check local wildlife regulations rather than assuming one set of rules applies everywhere.
