Caspian Turtle

Found throughout freshwater rivers, streams, ponds, and marshes across the Middle East and surrounding regions, this semi-aquatic reptile spends much of its time basking on exposed rocks, logs, or muddy banks near water's edge. Look for the distinctive striped neck patterning and relatively flattened shell profile as individuals sun themselves in groups, and listen for the soft splash as they slide quickly into the water when disturbed. The best viewing opportunities come on warm spring and early summer mornings when individuals are most actively emerging to thermoregulate, and patience near slow-moving or still water with abundant basking sites will generally reward the observer.
