Reeves's Pheasant

Found in dense montane forests and wooded hillsides in central China, this large galliform tends to move through undergrowth and along forest edges in search of seeds, berries, and invertebrates. The male's extraordinarily long, boldly barred silver-and-black tail — sometimes exceeding 1.5 metres — is the single most striking field feature, while the rich chestnut and gold body scaling and white-capped head make even distant birds identifiable; listen for sharp, whistled alarm calls and the rustling of leaf litter as birds forage. Early morning visits to forest clearings and track edges in spring offer the best chances of encounter, when males are most active and vocal during the breeding season, though patience and stillness are essential given the species' naturally wary disposition.
