Grey Partridge

Look across open farmland, stubble fields and hedgerow margins in Europe for a small, round-bodied gamebird that moves in tight family groups, or coveys, low through vegetation and explodes into a fast, whirring flight if flushed. It forages on the ground for seeds and insects and is most visible in early morning or evening at field edges. Numbers have fallen sharply in many regions due to agricultural intensification, so it is now most reliably found on farmland managed with wildlife-friendly practices such as retained hedgerows and stubble.
