About This Species
Common in savanna woodland and thornveld across southern Africa, moving through trees and shrubs to feed on fruit, leaves, and flowers, often in small, vocal groups. Its loud, nasal call, widely rendered as sounding like 'go away', is usually heard well before the bird is seen and is a reliable way to locate it. Activity is most noticeable in the cooler hours around dawn and dusk, when groups move and call more frequently.
Ethical Viewing Guidelines
- It tolerates a fairly close approach compared with many birds, but keeping to about the width of a small clearing away is a reasonable default so groups do not scatter.
- Wildlife protection legislation and permitted activities vary by country across southern Africa, so rules should be confirmed locally, particularly inside national parks and reserves where off-road approach is often restricted.
- Avoid following a group closely through vegetation, since repeated pursuit interrupts feeding.
