About This Species
This large hummingbird favors montane pine-oak and cloud forest from the southwestern United States through Central America, visiting flowering shrubs, sage, and feeders along forest edges and canyon streams at higher elevations. Males show iridescent violet-blue crowns and green throats that flash in direct sunlight, best seen near nectar sources in mid-morning.
Ethical Viewing Guidelines
- Observe from a stationary position near flowers or feeders rather than following an individual bird, since hummingbirds defend feeding territories and repeated approach can drive them off a valuable nectar source.
- If hosting a feeder, clean it regularly to avoid contamination.
