Buff-Bellied Hummingbird

A hummingbird of scrub, gardens and woodland edge along the Gulf coast of Texas and eastern Mexico, recognisable by its buff-washed belly and curved bill. Look for it hovering at tubular flowers such as turk's cap and salvia, or perched on a bare twig between feeding bouts, particularly in winter when many individuals move south from Texas into Mexico. Feeders stocked with sugar water are a reliable way to see one at close range.
