Green Hermit

A slender hummingbird of humid forest understory in Central and northern South America, recognisable by its long, curved bill and pale-tipped tail streamers. It traplines a regular circuit of Heliconia and Costus flowers rather than defending a single patch, and males gather at communal singing perches called leks to deliver thin, insect-like songs. Early morning along shaded forest trails and edges, where the nectar plants it favours are in bloom, offers the best chance of a close look.
