Anna's Hummingbird

This small, feisty hummingbird is a year-round resident along the US West Coast, frequenting gardens, chaparral and eucalyptus groves wherever flowering plants or feeders are available. Males perform a dramatic courtship dive, climbing high before plunging and pulling up with a sharp chirp produced by their tail feathers, a display most conspicuous in winter and early spring when other hummingbirds have migrated away. Listen for a scratchy, buzzy song from an exposed perch as a sign a male is defending a feeding territory.
