Black-Throated Mango
Anthracothorax nigricollis
About This Species
A hummingbird of forest edge, savanna and gardens across northern South America, the male notable for its iridescent green body and black throat stripe. It favours flowering trees and shrubs in semi-open habitat, feeding by hovering at blossoms and defending productive patches from other hummingbirds with fast chases. Gardens and forest clearings with flowering plants offer good views throughout the year across most of its range.
Ethical Viewing Guidelines
- Watch from a short distance near flowering plants or feeders rather than approaching directly, as sudden movement disrupts feeding.
- Protection varies by country across its South American range, though general wildlife disturbance laws typically apply.
- Keep feeders clean and positioned away from windows and predators to avoid injury.
