Hoffmann's Woodpecker

Favours open woodland, forest edges, plantations and even garden trees across its Central American range, where it drums on dead branches and gives a sharp rattling call to advertise territory. Look for a mid-sized woodpecker with a barred back and golden nape working along trunks and low branches for insects, sap and fruit. Activity peaks in the cooler early morning hours and it is present year-round, so no particular season is required to find it.
