Campo Flicker
Colaptes campestris
Also known as: Field Flicker
About This Species
An unusually ground-dwelling woodpecker of open grassland, savanna and scattered woodland in central South America, often seen walking or hopping on the ground probing for ants and termites rather than clinging to tree trunks. Look for its barred plumage and undulating flight between low perches, most active during the warmer daylight hours when ground insects are active.
Ethical Viewing Guidelines
- A moderate distance of several metres allows observation of ground-foraging behaviour without causing birds to retreat into cover.
- Wildlife protection regulations vary across its South American range, so rely on the general principle of not approaching nest burrows, which these birds excavate in earth banks or termite mounds and which are vulnerable to collapse or abandonment if disturbed.
