Green-Barred Woodpecker

Look and listen for this boldly barred woodpecker in open woodland, savanna and parkland across central and southern South America, where it forages on the ground as often as on tree trunks, probing for ants and other insects. Its loud, rolling call and drumming are frequently the easiest way to locate it, especially in the early morning. It is a year-round resident, so it can be found in suitable habitat at any time, though breeding season activity around nest holes increases visibility in spring.
