About This Species
A gregarious parakeet of dry forest, savanna and coastal scrub in northern South America and nearby islands, often seen in noisy flocks flying between roost and feeding sites. Look for a mid-sized green parakeet with a brownish throat patch, and listen for harsh, chattering calls as flocks pass overhead or gather in fruiting or flowering trees. Early morning and late afternoon flights to and from roosts offer the most reliable viewing.
Ethical Viewing Guidelines
- Flocks are generally tolerant of distant observation but will scatter noisily if approached too closely, so watch from a distance with binoculars rather than walking toward a perched group.
- Parrots are subject to trade restrictions and protection laws in much of their range, so never attempt to capture, feed, or handle wild birds.
- Give roost trees extra space at dusk and dawn when large numbers are concentrated and most vulnerable to disturbance.
