About This Species

Look and listen for a bright green parakeet with a long tail and a screeching, far-carrying call, often seen in noisy flocks flying between roost trees and feeding areas in parks, gardens and woodland edges. It is a conspicuous, easily identified introduced species in many cities. Communal roosts are most spectacular around dusk, when large numbers gather with considerable noise before settling for the night.

Ethical Viewing Guidelines

Ordinary caution around any wild bird applies, but because this species is a naturalised introduction across much of its current range rather than a native species of conservation concern, protections and management approaches vary widely by country and are sometimes quite different from those covering native birds.
Where it is native, in parts of Africa and Asia, standard wildlife protection laws apply.
Viewing roosts from a distance without approaching individual birds is a reasonable general practice regardless of location.
