About This Species
This small, short-tailed parakeet favours dry forest, scrub, and cultivated land from southern Mexico to northern South America, often gathering in noisy, fast-flying flocks that give away their presence long before they land. Watch fruiting and flowering trees, where groups cling and clamber while feeding, and listen for their sharp, chattering calls in flight. Flocks tend to be most active and vocal in the cooler hours of early morning and late afternoon.
Ethical Viewing Guidelines
- Observing from a distance of several metres with binoculars is sufficient and avoids scattering a feeding flock, which wastes the birds' energy and can separate young from adults.
- Protections for parrots and their relatives vary widely among the many countries within this species' range, and some populations face additional pressure from capture for the pet trade, so avoid any behaviour that could be mistaken for baiting or luring birds closer.
- Leaving nesting cavities and roost trees undisturbed is the simplest way to reduce impact when watching this species.
