About This Species
Look for this large seabird soaring on thermals over coastal waters and islands, rarely flapping and often chasing other seabirds to steal their catch rather than diving for its own food. Males display an inflatable red throat pouch during the breeding season, making breeding colonies a striking sight from a boat or shoreline. It is present year-round in tropical and subtropical coastal areas, with breeding colonies most active and visible in the dry season.
Ethical Viewing Guidelines
- Keep well back from breeding colonies, at least 50 metres by boat or on foot, since frigatebirds are highly sensitive to disturbance and adults will abandon eggs or chicks to gulls and other predators if flushed repeatedly.
- Nesting colonies are frequently within protected areas or reserves where specific approach distances and boat speed limits are set locally, and these rules vary by country and site, so check before visiting.
- Avoid using drones near colonies, which can cause mass flushing even at a distance.
