About This Species
Breeds on open upland moorland in northern Europe, where its golden-spangled back plumage provides excellent camouflage against heather and peat, then moves to lowland farmland, estuaries, and coastal fields in large flocks for the winter. Listen for its plaintive, whistled call, often given in flight, which can alert you to a flock passing overhead before you spot them on the ground. Large winter flocks feeding on ploughed fields or coastal mudflats, often mixed with lapwings, are the most reliable and accessible way to see this species.
