Stocky and hunch-shouldered, this species roosts in dense waterside vegetation — willows, reeds, and mangroves — during daylight hours, becoming active at dusk when it moves to the water's edge to stand motionless or shuffle slowly through shallows, stabbing at fish, frogs, and invertebrates. Watch for the short, thick silhouette lifting off at last light with steady, relatively quick wingbeats, and listen for the distinctive flat, barking *kwok* call overhead — often your first indication of its presence as birds move between roost and feeding sites. Breeding colonies in spring offer the most reliable daytime views, as adults and fledglings are conspicuous in trees above nest platforms; otherwise, target the hour around sunset at calm freshwater margins, marshes, or tidal flats, where low light and quiet conditions draw birds into the open.
