Goliath Heron

Standing motionless for extended periods at the margins of large rivers, lakes, and papyrus swamps, this massive heron hunts fish and frogs by slow stalking or patient ambush in shallow water, often tolerating little disturbance before making a labored, deep-winged departure. Watch for the towering slate-grey and chestnut silhouette — unmistakable among herons by sheer scale — and listen at dawn and dusk for the harsh, booming bark it gives in flight, often the first indication of its presence before it clears the reed line. The most reliable sightings come during the early dry season when receding water concentrates fish and exposes wide mudflats, with first light and the final hour before sunset offering the best chances as activity peaks sharply during these crepuscular windows.
