Red-Throated Loon

Winters along sheltered coastal waters and estuaries where it dives for fish, appearing slimmer and more upturned-billed than other divers; look for its pale grey-brown winter plumage and habit of holding its head tilted upward. In summer it retreats to isolated tundra and moorland pools in the far north to breed, where its eerie wailing calls carry across open water — winter coastal watching from headlands is the easiest way for most people to see one.
