About This Species
Lives in broadleaf forest and forest edge across the Himalayan foothills and parts of East and Southeast Asia, usually in noisy, sociable family groups moving through the canopy and mid-story. The long tail, grey body and black cap are distinctive, and loud, harsh chattering calls often reveal a group before it is seen. Forest edges and hill-station gardens through the day are reliable places to look.
Ethical Viewing Guidelines
- Covered by national wildlife protection laws in India and other range states, though as a common, adaptable corvid it is a low enforcement priority.
- Standard viewing distance is fine; avoid deliberately baiting or feeding birds to draw them closer, and give nest sites a wide berth.
