Spotted Nutcracker
Nucifraga caryocatactes
Also known as: Northern Nutcracker, Eurasian Nutcracker, Nutcracker
About This Species
Look for this stocky corvid in mature coniferous and mixed forest, where it forages on pine seeds and hazelnuts and is known for burying caches it relies on through winter. Its harsh, grating call often gives away its presence before it is seen, and it perches conspicuously on treetops when carrying food. Autumn is the best season to watch caching behaviour, while irruption years can bring unusual numbers into new areas.
Ethical Viewing Guidelines
- Observe from a distance with binoculars rather than approaching feeding or caching birds, since repeated disturbance can interrupt the food-storing behaviour it depends on for winter survival.
- Wild bird protection laws differ across its range through Europe and Asia, so check local rules before visiting a known site rather than assuming any single country's protections apply everywhere.
- Avoid drawing attention to nest sites if one is found.
