Brewer's Blackbird

About This Species
Look for a glossy, dark bird with a pale eye walking confidently across open ground such as parking lots, farmland and lawns, often in noisy mixed flocks with other blackbirds. Males show an iridescent purple-green sheen in good light, while females are a plainer brownish grey. It is present year-round in much of its range, so there is no single best season, though flocks are often largest and most conspicuous outside the breeding period.
Ethical Viewing Guidelines
- Give foraging flocks room to move away naturally rather than walking directly at them, and avoid approaching nests in shrubs or low trees during the breeding season.
- As a species now considered near threatened, avoid actions that could disturb it, though general disturbance risk is closer to a common garden bird than a rare one.
- Migratory bird protections apply across much of its range, with the details varying by country.
