About This Species
One of the smallest birds across its South Asian range, it favours gardens, forest edge and scrub wherever mistletoe or berry-bearing shrubs grow, feeding rapidly and almost constantly given its tiny size. Its thin, high-pitched calls are often the first clue to its presence, given how easily it disappears among foliage. Mistletoe-laden trees in flower or fruit are the most reliable places to watch it feed at close range.
Ethical Viewing Guidelines
- A distance of a few metres from a feeding tree is usually enough, since it is generally unfazed by quiet, still observers.
- Wild birds are protected under national wildlife legislation across its range, so nests, which are tiny and easily overlooked, should not be searched for or disturbed.
- Avoid removing mistletoe clumps from garden trees, since they are this bird's primary food source and nesting cover.
