About This Species
Look for a compact, blue-grey bird moving head-first down tree trunks and along branches, wedging seeds and nuts into bark crevices before hammering them open with its stout bill. Its loud, ringing whistle often reveals its presence in mature deciduous or mixed woodland before the bird itself is spotted. Woodland with old trees offers good views year-round, with especially active foraging at bird feeders in winter and vocal territorial activity in early spring.
