About This Species

Look for these vocal, grey-headed honeyeaters in loose colonies through eucalypt woodland, parks and leafy suburbs across eastern Australia, where they perch conspicuously on open branches and wires. They are easiest to find by ear first, following harsh chattering and mobbing calls as the colony drives off intruders, then by eye as birds sally out to chase and forage in the canopy. Active and visible year-round, they are most demonstrative in the breeding season from spring through summer when colony defence peaks.

A common and confident species that will often approach people rather than the reverse, so simply keep a relaxed distance and avoid handling or feeding it, since human food can harm birds and encourages dependency.
Wild bird protections vary across Australian states, generally prohibiting deliberate harm, nest disturbance or capture without a permit, so treat any nest as off-limits and observe from a distance that does not change its behaviour.
Because colonies actively mob perceived threats, stepping back if you trigger alarm calls avoids provoking unnecessary stress on the birds and other wildlife they are driving off.
