About This Species
A small, acrobatic bird of gardens, hedgerows, and deciduous or mixed woodland across Europe, readily coming to peanut and seed feeders where it often hangs upside down from thin twigs. It forages actively through outer branches and foliage gleaning insects and seeds, and its blue cap and yellow underside make it easy to pick out even at speed. Feeder visits peak in the colder months, while spring is best for hearing its high, scolding calls near nest holes in old trees or nest boxes.
Ethical Viewing Guidelines
- This is a common, adaptable species that tolerates people well at garden feeders, so ordinary garden distances are fine; there is no need to approach a feeding bird closely to get a good look.
- Nests in cavities are more sensitive, and in the UK and much of the EU wild birds, their nests and eggs are protected by law, so nest boxes should not be opened or disturbed while in use.
- Avoid handling or crowding fledglings that appear grounded, as parents are usually nearby and still feeding them.
