About This Species
Look for a small, active tit with a distinctive black-and-white speckled crest, usually detected first by its soft purring trill among conifers. It favours mature pine and spruce forest, often joining mixed foraging flocks with other tits and goldcrests as they move through the canopy searching for insects and seeds. Autumn and winter flocks are easiest to follow, since birds call frequently as they move between trees.
Ethical Viewing Guidelines
- Standing still and letting a foraging flock come to you works better than approaching directly, and a distance of several metres is usually enough not to disturb feeding birds.
- Nesting activity is protected under wildlife law across its European range, so avoid approaching or lingering near tree cavities during the breeding season.
- Quiet observation with binoculars from beneath the canopy is the least disruptive approach.
