About This Species
This ground-dwelling lark favours open, dry habitats such as farmland, steppe and bare or sparsely vegetated ground across Eurasia and North Africa, often walking rather than hopping as it forages for seeds and insects. Its short crest and stocky build help distinguish it from similar larks, and males give a fluty, varied song from the ground or during a brief hovering display flight. Spring is the most rewarding season, when males sing prominently to establish territory before crops or vegetation grow tall.
