Mountain Bluebird

Scan open meadows, grassland, and high-elevation clearings across the western mountains for this bluebird hovering low over grass before dropping onto insects, a hunting style distinct from the perch-and-pounce habit of other bluebirds. Males show a vivid sky-blue overall, unmistakable in good light. Breeding season in alpine and subalpine meadows offers the best views, while birds move to lower, more open country in winter.
