About This Species
This cavity-nesting thrush favours open country with scattered trees, orchards, golf courses and nest-box trails, where it perches conspicuously on fences and low branches before dropping to the ground for insects. The male's vivid blue back and rusty breast make it one of the more easily identified songbirds in its range. Spring through summer, near nest boxes at dawn, offers the best chance of prolonged views.
Ethical Viewing Guidelines
- Observe nest boxes from a distance rather than opening or approaching them repeatedly, since frequent disturbance can cause parents to desert eggs or young.
- General migratory bird protections across its range make it illegal to disturb active nests or handle birds.
- Quiet observation from several metres away, ideally with binoculars, is both effective and low-impact.
