Rock Bunting
Emberiza cia
Also known as: European Rock Bunting
About This Species
Look for this bunting on rocky, sparsely vegetated slopes, terraced farmland and scrubby hillsides, where it perches on stones or low bushes and sings a short, dry, rattling song. Its grey head with dark stripes is distinctive at close range through binoculars. Spring and early summer, during the breeding season when males sing from prominent perches, offer the most reliable views.
Ethical Viewing Guidelines
- View from a distance using binoculars rather than approaching perches or ground-nesting sites directly, since disturbance during the breeding season can cause nest abandonment.
- Wild birds and their nests are protected under wildlife legislation across its range in Europe and parts of Asia, though the details differ by country, so treat nest sites as strictly off-limits.
- Move away if a singing bird stops and gives alarm calls.
