About This Species
A small forest and garden bird found across South and Southeast Asia, usually seen low in shaded understorey or scrub, sallying out for insects and returning to the same perch. The male's soft, warbling song and vivid blue-and-orange plumage help pick it out against dense foliage. It is present year-round through much of its range and most conspicuous during the breeding season when males sing persistently from low perches.
Ethical Viewing Guidelines
- Viewing from a few metres with binoculars is sufficient and avoids pushing the bird off its favoured perch.
- Protection status and enforcement vary considerably across the many countries it inhabits, so treat any specific claimed distance or statute with caution and instead follow the more general principle of not approaching an active nest or using extended playback to draw the bird in.
- Moving quietly and limiting time at any one spot reduces stress on breeding pairs.
