About This Species
Watch for a small, upright bird perched conspicuously on low bushes, fence wires, or exposed rocks in open scrub, grassland, and farmland edges across South and Southeast Asia. Males are glossy black and white while females and juveniles are streaked brown, and both flick their tails and dart down to snatch insects before returning to the same perch. It is a common, easily found resident year-round, most active and vocal in early morning and late afternoon.
Ethical Viewing Guidelines
- A tolerant species around villages and cultivated land, so a normal walking pace and a distance of a few metres from the perch is usually enough not to flush it.
- Protection status for common resident birds varies widely by country across its Asian range, so check local wildlife law rather than assuming a single rule, and avoid lingering near an active nest regardless.
- Give it more space if it is carrying food or giving alarm calls, both signs of a nearby nest.
