About This Species
A small, long-tailed warbler of South Asian grassy scrub, hedgerows and garden edges, usually detected first by its buzzy, insect-like calls and a cocked tail carried well above the body. It forages low in dense cover, moving jerkily through grass tufts and shrubs, and is a year-round resident, so it can be found in any season in suitable habitat. Early morning, when it is most vocal and active near the edges of scrub, offers the easiest opportunity to see it well.
Ethical Viewing Guidelines
- This is a widespread, common resident across the Indian subcontinent, and while specific wildlife protection statutes vary between the countries in its range, general disturbance of native birds and their nests is discouraged or restricted in most of them.
- A quiet approach from several metres, without pushing into dense scrub where a nest might be hidden, is the simplest way to watch it without causing stress.
- Local wildlife protection rules should be checked if closer observation or photography near a nest is intended.
