About This Species
Favours reedbeds, tall grass and scrubby wetland margins, where it clambers through stems more like a warbler than a typical songbird. Listen for a buzzy, scratchy song delivered from an exposed reed top, often the easiest way to locate it before it drops back into cover. Breeding season brings the most vocal activity and the best chance of a clear view as birds sing from prominent perches.
Ethical Viewing Guidelines
- Watch from the edge of the reedbed rather than pushing into it, since trampling wetland vegetation damages the nesting habitat this species depends on.
- Protections for wild birds and their habitats vary by country across its Asian range, so check local rules before entering a wetland reserve.
- A pair of binoculars and a stationary position at the margin will usually produce better views than approaching closer.
