About This Species
This warbler skulks low in dense Mediterranean scrub, maquis and garrigue, more often heard than seen as it delivers a scratchy, chattering song from cover. Males show a black cap and a bare red eye-ring that stands out when a bird briefly perches in the open. Spring is the best season, when singing males are more likely to show themselves at the top of a bush before dropping back into hiding.
Ethical Viewing Guidelines
- Stay back from dense scrub during the breeding season, since this is exactly the low cover where nests are placed and easily disturbed by someone pushing in to get a closer look.
- Protection of wild birds and their nests is written into law across the EU and much of the wider Mediterranean, though enforcement and specific provisions vary by country, so check local rules if in doubt.
- Playback and pishing can draw a bird out of cover but should be used sparingly, especially near a likely nest site.
